So, you have entered college or have been a student for sometime -- GOOD FOR YOU! Higher Education, for most people, is the key that unlocks the door for intellectual enlightenment and career opportunities. College, however, is very demanding, time consuming, and stressful. To succeed and excel in college, you must be prepared for the rigors of higher education and committed toward success.
The demographic profile of the typical college has changed dramatically through the years and the challenges of college can often become overwhelming. While the traditional college student -- young adults fresh out of high school and living with parents -- still exists, there is a growing number of students who are married with children, single with children, working full-time, actively involved in their respective community, and very busy outside of college. As an Instructor of Sociology, having taught at both 4-year universities and community colleges, I have witnessed students who excelled at college and those who failed. My own experiences as a college student are still relatively fresh in my mind as I strive to keep them alive in order to better counsel my students who are experiencing both triumphs and failures. It is my intent in the following pages to provide students with some advice, tips, and pointers on how to survive, and excel in, the many challenges that await them as they pursue a higher education.
